We Rebuilt Chicken Coop From Scratch 🐔 Katy’s Homestead Chick Inn Revival
Katy brings this Chick Inn chicken coop back to life! Bent frame, missing parts, no problem. Watch how she reuses everything to build a predator-proof broiler coop on the homestead. ...🐔
We didn’t buy new — we rebuilt! 💪 In this DIY homestead project, Katy restores our original Chick Inn chicken coop from over 16 years ago to house 32 broiler chicks. The frame was bent, parts were scattered in the barn, and it hadn’t been used in years... but Katy made it work.
If you're into homesteading, reusing what you’ve got, or raising chickens without breaking the bank, this is the build for you.
She walks you through every step: sorting the old parts, painting the bent metal frame, securing fencing, laying tarp covers, driving ground anchors, and finally—bringing in the baby broilers. 🐥
📌 What you’ll learn in this video:
How to rebuild a chicken coop from an old frame
Predator-proofing tips for mobile coops
Why you don’t always need to buy new to raise broiler chicks
Bedding tips for healthy, happy meat birds
How one woman can do it all 💁♀️ (even dragging metal through a field!)

0:00 - Introduction: Rebuilding the Chick-Inn Chicken Coop 🐔
Katy kicks off this DIY farm project, rebuilding our original chicken coop to house 32 broiler chicks.
0:27 - Finding Old Frame Parts in the Barn
We dig through the barn to find all the pieces of the old Chick-Inn frame — nothing like a good scavenger hunt!
1:15 - Sorting Pieces for Easy Assembly
Katy sorts all the frame parts into piles so the build can move fast once we start assembling.
1:36 - Rebuilding the Chicken Coop Frame from Scratch
Watch as Katy rebuilds the curved frame by hand — no pallet, no skid steer, just good old-fashioned farm grit.
3:25 - Installing the Predator-Proof Wire Screen
We wrap the lower walls with wire mesh to keep raccoons, foxes, and other pests away from the chicks.
3:56 - Framing the Main Door Opening
Katy double-checks her measurements and gets the main access door lined up for easy chick entry and exit.
5:31 - Tightening Up the Frame the Next Day
After a night of settling, we come back to reinforce the frame and make sure it's perfectly square and tight.
6:56 - Aligning the Tarp Over the Man Door
Katy installs the tarp support tubing around the man door before the big tarp goes on top.
8:16 - Painting the Coop Frame and Wire Fencing
Time to freshen it up! Katy paints the metal frame and fencing with silver aluminum paint to protect from rust.
8:43 - Laying Out the Old Tarp Cover
We unfold and inspect the original Chick-Inn tarp cover, checking for tears and preparing it for installation.
9:35 - Installing the Roof and Side Tarp Covers
With the ladder and some patience, Katy secures the tarp across the roof and sides — this is the weatherproofing layer.
12:11 - Securing the Roll-Up Side Wall
The roll-up wall gets its support tube slid into place, creating a flap that we can raise for airflow.
14:16 - Driving in the Ground Anchors for Security
Katy installs screw-in anchors using a hammer and stake to keep the coop from blowing away in storms.
14:45 - Spreading Straw and Wood Shavings for Bedding
We lay down straw, then top it with soft wood shavings to create a warm, dry, and cozy space for the chicks.
16:35 - Putting the Baby Chicks Into Their New Coop 🐥
The moment we’ve all waited for — meet the chicks! Katy gently moves them into their new Chick-Inn broiler coop.Show More
